Things to remember when choosing self-storage

There are now numerous options available for self-storage. When looking over your options, make sure to keep these things in mind so you make the right choice.

Make a list of requirements

Don’t start calling self-storage companies until you have made a list of what you need. You will need to determine the type of storage unit you need, how much space you need, whether it needs to be climate controlled, and whether your items are valuable and require insurance or extra security.

Security of Premises

Find out exactly what their security protocols are. Is there a guard on duty 24/7? Who is allowed to enter the premises? Is there a keypad at the gate or can anyone enter the premises? Are the video cameras monitoring all the units? Are the doors and latches on the units in good condition?

Condition

Always take a tour of the storage facility. See the insides of units to make sure they are clean, that the walls are free of rust, that the doors and latches are in good condition, and there aren’t any leaks or holes in the units. Note whether there are any cracks or white spots on the floor, as this is a sign that water could come through. Pay attention to the smell of the unit. A musty smell is a sign that mildew or mold is growing. Good drive-up storage units will have a small gap between the walls and ceiling to allow air flow, which helps prevent mold.

Location

Depending on what you are storing, it might be very important to have a storage unit which is located nearby. This way, you can easily go over and get whatever items you need from the unit.

Property manager

A good self-storage facility will have a property manager on site 24/7. This not only ensures security, but is important in case you have any issues, such as the door gets jammed or you notice a leak. Meet the property manager and see if he/she is friendly and courteous.

Price

Price is obviously important, but it should not be the ultimate deciding factor. Remember, it is worth it to pay a bit more for a secure, clean storage facility than risk having all of your belongings damaged or stolen!
