How to arrange furniture in your new home?

When you got all your furniture, you probably got it to fit your home exactly. When you move to a new home, you may find that all your furniture doesn’t quite fit the space like it used to. Here are some tips on how to arrange furniture in your new home so your home looks great and is comfortable.

Measure before you move!

One of the biggest mistakes that people make with moving is forgetting to measure their furniture. Then, on moving day, they find themselves in a jam when the armorer won’t fit through the new home’s doorway. Measure everything! You don’t want to overlook a detail which could make a big difference to your furniture plan. For example, measure the height of the windows in your new home. The windows might be lower, which may mean that the back of your sofa will block the windows.

Get a floor plan app

Download a floor plan app which allows you to put in the dimensions of rooms and furniture. Then you can have fun virtually arranging your belongings in the space. This will save you a lot of time and physical labor of moving heavy items around the new home trying to figure out where they look best.

Be prepared to get rid of items

Don’t hold onto furniture just because of sentimental value. If there is no place for it in your new home, then get rid of it. You then won’t have to pay for moving the furniture. On the flip side, don’t throw away items too quickly just because you don’t want to move them. Moving is expensive and you don’t want to have to budget for new furniture right away! You can always replace furniture which isn’t quite right later on.

Find the focal point of each room

Each room should have a focal point around which all furniture is arranged. In a living room, the focal point might be a fireplace or entertainment center. In bedrooms, it may be a window with a beautiful view. If there isn’t a natural focal point for the room, think about how you can make one – such as by hanging a tapestry on the wall.

Balance large and small items

As a general rule, you don’t want too many big items all crammed together in a space. You should balance them out, such as large sofa flanked by slim end tables.
